What the 2006 YouTube lockup is

The mark in question is the early YouTube wordmark used around the 2006 Google acquisition: the word You set in dark lettering, followed by Tube in light lettering inside a red, rounded rectangle that reads as a television screen. It is a two-part lockup built on a CRT-tube metaphor, not the later standalone play-button icon and not a generic video glyph. For vector work, that lockup is the asset family under discussion: lettering plus the red container, with any bevel, highlight, or soft edge treated as separate drawing, not as proof that a file is editable.

Before 2006: the launch lockup the acquisition year inherited

YouTube’s public launch in 2005 already used this You-plus-Tube construction. The red field stood in for a TV tube; the split coloring made Tube the object inside the screen and You the speaker outside it. By 2006 the company was widely recognized under that lockup, so the acquisition-year identity is a continuation of the launch mark rather than a new drawing. Early reproductions often show a slightly dimensional red shape—rounded corners, a hint of bevel or inner highlight—so the screen feels like a physical object. Those cues belong to the period look; they are not a separate logo.

After 2006: flattening, tighter geometry, and a new primary icon

Later official systems kept the red container and the split word, then reduced the dimensional finish. Highlights and soft bevels receded; the rectangle became a flatter, more regular round-rect; letter spacing and corner radius were tightened so the lockup would hold at small sizes and on screens. A further system change introduced a standalone play-button icon as a primary mark beside a simplified wordmark. That later icon is a different asset. It does not replace a 2006-accurate reconstruction, and a 2006-accurate reconstruction should not borrow the later icon’s proportions or geometry.

How to read the artwork as vector structure

A practical vector breakdown of the 2006 lockup has three drawing groups: the You letters, the Tube letters, and the red screen. If a period version includes a bevel, inner highlight, or drop of depth, those belong in their own objects or strokes so they can be turned off for a flat variant without redrawing the word. The container is a closed shape with consistent corner radii, not a photographed TV and not a raster blob clipped inside a rectangle. Letterforms should be outlines. Overlaps where Tube sits inside the red field need a clean knockout or a reversed fill, not a flattened picture of white type.

A file that opens in a drawing app is not automatically editable vector. Many circulating copies are screenshots, compressed previews, or a raster image placed on an artboard. Those can look sharp at one size and fall apart when scaled, recolored, or separated. True vector artwork is path geometry: anchors, curves, and fills that remain crisp at any size. A filename, a .svg or .ai extension, or a “vector” label in a download pack does not prove that the YouTube lettering is live outlines. Open the file and inspect whether the word and the red screen are paths. If the mark is a single embedded picture, it is a raster preview, even when the wrapper is a vector format.

Practical use when you need the 2006 drawing

  • Match the period lockup: dark You, light Tube inside the red screen, no later play-button icon unless the brief calls for the later system.
  • Keep the screen metaphor in the geometry: a rounded rectangle, not a sharp-cornered box and not the later icon’s triangle-in-circle proportions.
  • Prefer outlined lettering over live retail fonts. The lockup’s lettering is custom to the mark; substituting a lookalike typeface changes width, terminals, and the fit of Tube inside the red field.
  • Store effects as optional objects. A bevel-on version can document 2006 appearance; a bevel-off version is what you need for small sizes and single-color applications.
  • Do not treat a raster capture from an old interface, video still, or print scan as master artwork. Trace only if the job is a reconstruction, and keep the trace as paths you can edit, not as a locked image.

Download, modification, and trademark

Permission to download a logo file is not permission to modify the artwork, substitute fonts, or use the name and red screen as a trademark. YouTube’s wordmark, the red tube device, and later play-button icon are brand identifiers. Reconstructing them in vector for study, archival comparison, or an authorized production file does not by itself grant rights to apply the mark on a product, channel, or impersonating interface. Fonts inside an official kit, if any, may carry their own licenses separate from the logo drawing. When the job is a before-and-after evaluation, keep the 2006 lockup labeled as a period identity and keep any later icon in its own file so the two systems are not mixed in delivery.

What this evaluation cannot specify from the brief

No official 2006 master file, color specification, type license, or delivery format was supplied here. Exact red values, corner-radius measurements, and outline-vs-stroke construction of the original masters are therefore not stated as documented facts. Whether a given download is live vector, a raster embed, or a redraw is a per-file inspection, not something a name or extension can answer. Where a production job needs color, clearance, or an authorized outline, that has to come from current brand governance or from measuring a verified original—not from this comparison alone.
