Wax Seal Mockups
How to choose a free wax stamp mockup or PSD for previewing a logo: what to check in licensing, file setup, editability and logo suitability before you use it.

The short answer
Free wax seal mockups are widely offered, most often as layered PSD files where you replace a placeholder with your own logo. Whether a given free file suits you depends on three things: its license (personal vs commercial use, attribution, redistribution), whether your editing software can open and edit it properly, and whether your logo reads clearly as an embossed impression. A mockup is a raster preview of how a mark might look. It does not show that a physical wax stamp can actually be made from your design.
No specific mockup sources, prices, resolutions or license texts were evaluated for this guide. The points below are general criteria for checking any free or paid wax stamp mockup, not a verdict on particular files.
Check the license before downloading
"Free" refers to price, not to what you are allowed to do. Read the license that ships with the file or appears on the download page, and confirm these points in writing.
- Commercial use: whether you can use the rendered preview in client presentations, product listings, ads or social posts for a business.
- Attribution: whether you must credit the creator, and where that credit has to appear.
- Redistribution: most mockup licenses forbid sharing or reselling the PSD itself, even after you have edited it. Confirm before passing the source file to a client.
- Template or merchandise use: whether you can sell finished images or templates built on the mockup.
- License scope of included assets: photos, textures or fonts bundled in the file may carry separate terms.
If the license is missing, vague, or contradicts the download page, treat the file as unsuitable for commercial work until the creator clarifies it.
Check the file format and editability
A wax stamp mockup PSD usually relies on smart objects: you open a linked layer, place your logo, save, and the emboss, lighting and shadow effects update automatically. Smart objects are a Photoshop feature. Other editors that open PSD files may support them partially or not at all, and may flatten or misrender layer effects. If you do not use Photoshop, test the file in your own editor before relying on it.
- Smart object placeholder: confirm the file has one clearly labelled layer for the logo, rather than requiring manual masking.
- Editable effects: check whether wax color, seal shape and background can be changed, or whether they are baked into the image.
- Resolution: confirm the output size is enough for your intended use, such as print proofs, web listings or presentations. The listing should state this. If it does not, open the file and check.
- Separate layers: a removable background lets you place the seal on your own stationery or packaging shots.
Prepare the logo for a wax impression
A wax seal renders the logo as raised and recessed relief, usually in one color. Simple, bold marks preview best. Thin strokes, small text and fine gradients tend to blur or vanish in the emboss effect, and may also be difficult to reproduce on a real stamp.
- Use a single-color version of the logo, typically solid black on transparent.
- Place a vector source (such as SVG, AI, EPS or PDF) into the smart object where your software allows it, so the mark stays sharp when scaled inside the placeholder.
- Check legibility at the actual seal size, not just at full screen.
- Try a simplified or monogram variant if the full logo loses detail.
Understand what the mockup does not prove
The exported mockup is a raster image for previewing. It is not a production file. If you plan to order a physical brass or metal stamp, the maker will need its own artwork, usually vector line art at a specified diameter with minimum line weights. A design that looks convincing in a mockup can still fall outside a manufacturer's limits, so confirm specifications with the stamp maker before finalizing.
Quick checklist
| Check | What to confirm | Why it matters |
| License | Commercial use, attribution, redistribution terms | Determines whether you can use the preview for business purposes |
| Software | Smart objects and effects work in your editor | Avoids broken or flattened previews |
| Placeholder | Clearly labelled smart object layer | Makes logo replacement quick and clean |
| Resolution | Stated or verified output size | Ensures the preview suits print or web use |
| Logo version | Single-color, simplified vector mark | Keeps the embossed impression legible |
| Production | Stamp maker's artwork specifications | A mockup does not confirm manufacturability |
