Uncle Ben’s logo change: evaluating the before-and-after branding
Uncle Ben’s rice retired its portrait lockup for Ben’s Original. What changed in the mark, and what that means for vector artwork, files and use.

The essential change
The rice brand formerly sold as Uncle Ben’s retired its long-running name and circular portrait lockup in 2020. Mars, the owner, replaced that identity with Ben’s Original, a wordmark-led system with no character portrait. For anyone evaluating, tracing, converting or commissioning vector logo artwork, Ben’s Original is the current official mark. The Uncle Ben’s portrait lockup is a historical asset.
The retired Uncle Ben’s lockup
The former identity paired the Uncle Ben’s name with a circular framed portrait of an older Black man presented as Uncle Ben. The portrait was the dominant device on packaging and advertising. That structure matters for file work: a photographic or highly rendered face is commonly stored as an embedded raster image, even when the ring, type and background live on vector paths. A download named as EPS, AI, PDF or SVG can still hold a non-editable bitmap for the portrait. Editable outline paths have to be inspected inside the file.
The Ben’s Original successor
The successor brand drops the “Uncle” honorific and the portrait. Public packaging and brand materials present a compact Ben’s Original wordmark, usually in a warm gold or orange, sometimes with a simplified grain or product graphic. A wordmark of this kind is the conventional shape of vector logo delivery: type converted to paths, a small colour set, and artwork that scales without a photographic layer. Official colour builds, type outlines, clear-space rules and master file formats sit in the brand owner’s guidelines and are not reproduced here.
Before and after, as artwork
| Aspect | Retired Uncle Ben’s lockup | Ben’s Original mark |
| Primary device | Circular framed portrait plus brand name | Wordmark, sometimes with a grain or product graphic |
| Typical image makeup | Type and frame may be paths; the face is often a raster or a dense illustration | Type and simple devices suited to outline artwork |
| Brand status | Legacy name and lockup | Current official identity |
| Production use | Historical, archival or comparison work | Live packaging, templates and current communications |
Practical implications for vector work
- Start current jobs from authorised Ben’s Original masters rather than a scan or screenshot of old packaging.
- Treat legacy Uncle Ben’s files as mixed media until proven otherwise: opening them in an editor does not turn the portrait into Bézier outlines.
- Redrawing the old portrait as vectors is an illustration task of its own and creates no right to the trademark or the likeness.
- PNG, JPG, web images and pack photos are raster previews. They document appearance; they are not outline artwork.
- Lockup variants (horizontal, stacked, with or without a grain device) and colourways should come from authorised masters rather than from tracing a pouch photograph.
- Auto-tracing a web image of either era yields preview-quality paths. It is not a production master.
Current files versus legacy files
If the job is to match current rice packaging or digital brand use, request or license Ben’s Original vector masters from the brand owner or an authorised partner. If the job is historical documentation, archive or a before-and-after comparison, keep the retired lockup labelled as legacy so it is not placed into live templates, merch or print. Both eras may appear in the same asset library; the filename and the era of the pack shot are the cues for which mark is which.
Download, modification and trademarks
The old and new names, portraits, wordmarks and trade dress are trademarks. A publicly posted logo, press image or packaging photo grants a view of the mark. A licence to modify the artwork, to subset or replace its fonts, or to apply the mark on products, sites or print is a separate grant from the rights holder. Editing paths in a vector tool is a technical act. It is not a licence. Commissioned redraws and lookalike marks still sit against trademark, and against rights in the old portrait image.
What this assessment does not include
Official Pantone, CMYK or RGB builds, path counts, font names, and a file-by-file audit of any brand kit were not supplied for this review and are omitted. Those specifications are controlled by the brand owner. When a production job depends on exact colour, proportion or file format, confirm them against primary brand materials. Public announcements place the retirement of Uncle Ben’s and the introduction of Ben’s Original in 2020, with updated packaging following; finer rollout dates should be checked the same way.
