Roblox Logo Evolution: Before-and-After Evaluation
Before-and-after evaluation of the Roblox wordmark: the 3D italic lockup, the 2018 geometric refresh, and what that change means for vector artwork.

The essential answer
The Roblox identity under discussion is the company wordmark and its companion symbol, judged as vector-logo artwork. The before-and-after that matters in practice is the long-running three-dimensional italic ROBLOX lockup against the flatter custom-geometric wordmark published with the January 2018 brand refresh. That later lockup is the current public wordmark: all-caps letterforms with a rounded-square O, a constructed X, even stroke weight, and a single flat color in ordinary use.
For anyone evaluating or preparing files, the 2018 wordmark is a two-dimensional filled alphabet. The earlier lockup is a dimensional treatment whose bevels and extrusion are rendering effects, and it is widely copied as a picture. The companion icon is a tilted rounded square that shares the same block geometry. A downloadable image of either version is a file of the artwork; a license to edit paths, letterforms, fonts, or the trademark is a separate permission.
How the wordmark developed
Roblox originated in the mid-2000s as a user-built three-dimensional platform. The company dates to 2004; the public service is associated with 2006. For about a decade the brand was recognized by an italic, all-caps wordmark whose letters appeared extruded, like bricks. Reading those letters as building blocks is a visual interpretation of the treatment, aligned with the product’s construction fantasy, and it is not a quoted design brief.
In January 2018 Roblox published a new identity. The wordmark was redrawn as a custom geometric sans-serif in capitals. Dimension, bevel, and the heavy italic slant were dropped. Weight, terminals, and spacing were regularized so the name would hold at app-icon size, on merchandise, and in interface chrome. Studio authorship, construction grids, and an official statement of design intent for that refresh are not among the records available for this article; those points remain a gap and should not be treated as documented here.
Before-and-after structure
The two public marks differ in posture, depth, and how they are built as artwork. The table below records those structural differences. Readings of the O as a window, block, or player slot, and of the X as a build or play sign, are interpretation of the drawn forms.
| Aspect | Earlier wordmark | 2018 wordmark |
| Case and posture | All-caps, italic, compact fit | All-caps, upright, more even rhythm |
| Dimensional treatment | Bevels, highlights, implied extrusion | Flat fill with no modeled depth |
| Signature letters | Block-like italic glyphs | Rounded-square O; optically cut X |
| Typical reproduction | Raster screenshots and effect-heavy files | Closed paths and solid color |
| Companion symbol | Cube and block associations | Tilted rounded square |
Vector construction
The earlier mark is a poor fit for a small set of editable paths. Bevel highlights are separate shapes, blends, meshes, or embedded rasters sitting on letter outlines. Many files labeled as vectors of that era are outline traces of a PNG: a silhouette with no original spacing data and no true highlight construction. Distinguishing those pictures from live artwork is the first inspection step.
The 2018 wordmark follows ordinary identity-vector practice. Each letter is a closed path, or a small boolean group, filled at master size without a required stroke. The O can be described as a superellipse or rounded rectangle with a counter; that geometric description is interpretation of the public drawing. Shared radius, weight, and overshoot across the alphabet are what keep the lockup stable when it is scaled. The tilted-square symbol is a simple rounded polygon and redraws cleanly as a single compound shape.
- Confirm letters are paths or compound paths. An embedded bitmap inside a vector container is a raster preview, even when the file opens in a drawing app.
- Confirm a single fill, or a documented colorway, with live effects expanded or omitted in the master.
- Confirm the O counter is a real hole (compound path or even-odd fill) so it stays open in one-color use.
- Confirm optical corrections, including overshoot on O and X, still read at small sizes.
- Treat a PNG, a JPG, an app-store icon, and a screenshot of the site as pictures of the logo.
- Treat a .svg, .ai, .eps, or .pdf extension as a container label only. Inspect the file before calling it editable vector artwork.
What the change means in practice
If the task is redrawing, comparing, or specifying artwork, work from the 2018 geometry. It is the current public wordmark and it behaves as a conventional vector lockup: flat fills, closed letters, and a symbol that is a handful of curves. The earlier three-dimensional lockup remains a historical reference. Reproducing it faithfully as vectors means reconstructing bevels as discrete shapes, which is a different job from tracing the silhouette of the name.
Keep the wordmark and the tilted-square symbol as separate assets unless an official lockup already combines them. Do not rebuild the name in a substitute font and present it as the Roblox logo; the 2018 letters are custom. When a file mixes a vector outline with a placed pixel image of shading or of the old bevel, describe those layers separately: the outline is vector artwork, the placed image is a raster.
Download, modification and trademark
Roblox and the Roblox wordmark and symbols are trademarks of their owner. Access to a brand-kit file, a wiki image, or a marketplace listing is permission only to obtain that file under the terms that accompany it. A grant to modify paths, substitute letters, combine the mark with other brands, or use it in a way that suggests endorsement is a separate license. Fonts packaged inside an official file, if any, follow their own licenses, independent of the trademark.
Gaps in this evaluation: no designer of record is cited, no measured drawing or construction grid was available, and no particular brand-kit file was tested. Letter-form descriptions are visual interpretation of the public marks. File-handling notes are general vector-identity practice. Dates given for the company origin, the public platform, and the January 2018 refresh are the commonly reported milestones for those events; treat finer claims about internal process or intent as unverified until an attributable record is in hand.
