What the current Tumblr logo is

The logo in current public product use is a lowercase wordmark, tumblr., closed with a period, paired with a standalone lowercase t as the app and favicon mark. That pairing is what “the new Tumblr logo” usually points to in a version comparison: a restoration and optical refinement of the 2007 launch identity, after a 2018 redraw that had rebuilt the letters as a more geometric platform mark. Three specimens belong in the same conversation. The 2007 original set the all-lowercase name, the trailing period, the distinctive t, and a dark blue-gray field. The 2018 rebrand reconstructed the letterforms and opened the color system. The current mark puts the period, the classic t, and the navy field back in primary use. Files labeled as the Tumblr logo may come from any of these eras. An .svg or .eps extension records a file format; it does not prove official geometry, and a downloadable file does not grant permission to reuse the mark.

How the mark developed

Tumblr launched in 2007 with a compact lowercase wordmark. The name sat in one case. A period closed the lockup so the mark read as a finished line rather than a title. The t already had a second job: as an app icon it appeared in white on a rounded square of dark blue. That blue, widely published in later brand use as hex 36465D, gave the product a muted, slightly nocturnal register. Designer-of-record credits for the 2007 letterforms are a gap in the evidence available for this guide. The observable system is the record: one-case wordmark, period, t-as-icon, navy field.

Yahoo acquired Tumblr in 2013. Through that period the core wordmark and t icon remained the public face, with interface chrome changing around them. A full identity overhaul arrived in November 2018. The 2018 system rebuilt the wordmark on cleaner, more geometric construction, used a wider and brighter marketing palette, and redrew the standalone T as a constructed monogram meant to hold at small sizes. Primary brand-manual language and a named designer interview are not in the supplied evidence, so official motivation is flagged as unverified here. Contemporaneous coverage described the change as a modernization for a larger general audience; treat that as reported context rather than attributed brand intent.

Automattic acquired Tumblr in 2019. Product design then moved the identity back toward launch language: the period returned to the wordmark, navy returned as the primary field, and the t icon again matched the classic letterform. That restoration is the current mark most asset users now meet—new relative to the 2018 system, continuous with 2007. Optical refinements in production files (curve handles, hinting, icon corner treatment) may differ from a 2007 raster. Finer versioning of stroke, sidebearings, or corner radius is unspecified in the materials at hand.

Differences that matter in use

Compare the three on geometry, typography, spacing, color, scalability, and how editable the paths are likely to be. The notes below come from typical public specimens of each era. They are design observations under unmatched viewing conditions, not results of a controlled side-by-side test at matched size, resolution, and color profile.

Geometry and letterforms

The 2007 t is a custom lowercase: a crossbar, a relatively compact stem, and terminals particular enough that the letter works as a product mark. Inside the wordmark the remaining letters—u, m, b, l, r—keep a soft grotesque texture so the line holds together at modest header sizes. The 2018 redraw evened those strokes and opened counters. The T was drawn as a symbol first, with 16–32 pixel use as the priority, and the wordmark was brought into agreement with that monogram. The current mark realigns the t with the 2007 icon reading: white letter, navy rounded square, wordmark with period for headers. Recognition is meant to land on the original t. A later vector may still show tighter handles and more consistent curves than a launch-era raster.

Typography, the period, and spacing

The period is the fastest version check. A lockup that reads tumblr. belongs to the 2007 and current family. A lockup that reads tumblr with no full stop, or a standalone constructed T with no wordmark, is likely 2018 or a derivative. In a proper vector the period is a separate closed path. It needs enough weight to hold at small sizes, and enough proximity to the r to belong to the name. Classic spacing is tight and even. The 2018 wordmark generally ran more open tracking, which helps on large campaign surfaces and crowds a navigation bar. Measure sidebearings from the paths in the file. Tracking copied from a screenshot will drift.

Color

Classic and current primary use is a dark blue-gray field with a white mark, or the reverse. The value commonly published for that blue is 36465D; confirm it against the file you are shipping, because unofficial downloads drift. The 2018 system allowed brighter accents and multi-color applications around the core mark. For an interface or asset that should read as present-day Tumblr, navy plus white is the reliable pairing. For a recreation of a 2018-era campaign or a historical screenshot, the wider palette belongs to that specimen.

Scalability and vector editability

At favicon and app-icon sizes every era drops the full wordmark and uses the t or T. The wordmark is a header and print mark. Keep that split in a kit: an icon master, a wordmark master, and a wide lockup. Claims about which version holds up better at 16 pixels, in one color, or reversed out of a photograph are untested here. Observationally, the 2018 T’s even stroke is easier to keep legible when the drawing must snap to a pixel grid. The classic t’s character lives in more particular terminals, which reward a true vector and a dedicated small-size master.

Editability follows construction. Geometric 2018 letters are easier to rebuild on a grid with a consistent stroke and few inflection points. The classic wordmark is still a custom path, not a licensed text face you can type and outline. Replacing a letter from a retail grotesque will break the t and the period relationship. Work from outlined paths of the correct era. An SVG on a sharing site may be a tracing, a wrong-era redraw, or a raster wrapped in a vector container. Inspect anchors, close the paths, and compare the t and the period to a product screenshot of the era you need before treating the file as production-ready.

Which version to use

Choose by the job. Current product, app icon, or anything that should look like Tumblr today: the restored lowercase wordmark with period, plus the white t on the navy rounded square. Historical recreation of late-2018 through early Automattic marketing: the 2018 geometric wordmark and monogram, with that campaign’s wider color range. Launch-era or early-2010s documentary work: the 2007 wordmark and t, accepting that surviving files may be low-resolution rasters.

  • Separate the three eras into their own files and label period on or off.
  • Include a one-color master and a reversed master for each era.
  • Identify a file by the t’s construction and by whether the period is present; skip the filename as proof of geometry.
  • Compare the paths to a live product specimen of the era you need before shipping.
  • Treat availability of a download as a file-source fact only; it does not grant rights to use the name or the mark.

Official designer credits for each redraw, a full brand-manual spacing spec, and lab-tested size performance remain gaps. Optical judgment against a current screenshot is the practical check for anyone preparing vector assets.
