What this logo is

The subject is Planet Fitness’s current brand mark: a simplified planet-style badge paired with a bold PLANET FITNESS wordmark, still in the brand’s long-running purple and yellow palette. This audit compares that current lockup with the earlier, more illustrated globe identity, and it treats the change as a vector-artwork problem: which version you have, whether the file is live paths or a picture of the logo, and what you are allowed to do with it.

“New” here means the flattened, geometric identity now used across clubs, digital products, and merchandise. It is a refinement of the same name, colors, and planet idea. It is not a renamed brand and not a documented swap to a different color system. Taglines such as the judgement-free positioning line sit beside the mark in many applications; they are a separate lockup, not a substitute for the logo itself.

Before and after

The earlier identity leaned on a more pictorial globe, often with rings, highlights, or dimensional shading, locked up with the name. The current mark keeps the planet cue and the purple-and-yellow pairing, then reduces the globe to a cleaner circular badge and a more even wordmark. That is the design change this audit can describe from public brand use. It is an identity comparison, not a node-by-node inspection of official source files.

The practical result of the redesign is a mark that behaves more like a badge system: a full horizontal lockup where there is width, and a circular planet or letterform badge where there is only a square. Older globe art still circulates in downloads and clip libraries. Matching the version on current club signage, apparel, and apps is the first check, before any conversation about file type.

What the change means for vector artwork

A flatter planet badge is built from geometry a vector editor can hold as paths: circles, arcs, and solid letterforms. That structure is what lets the same artwork go to a website SVG, a vinyl cutter, embroidery, and large-format print without rebuilding the drawing for each size. The earlier globe, when it used blends, glows, or photographic surface detail, often needed a simplified redraw before those same uses.

True vector artwork is live paths and anchors you can select, join, and recolor. A raster preview is a bitmap picture of the logo, even when it sits inside an SVG, EPS, or PDF wrapper. An embedded raster is a placed image inside an otherwise vector file. Those three states look similar in a thumbnail and they are not interchangeable when you need to change a spot color, knock out a white background, or cut the mark from vinyl.

  • Open the file in a vector editor and click the art: paths and anchors confirm vector geometry; a single image box confirms a preview or an embedded bitmap.
  • Check layers and links for placed PNGs or JPEGs. An .svg, .ai, or .eps filename does not, by itself, prove editable paths.
  • Identify the lockup you actually need: full wordmark, badge-only, or stacked arrangement. Mixing an old globe with a current wordmark produces a hybrid that does not match either era.
  • Note whether the name is live type or outlined letterforms. Outlines print and scale reliably; live type stays editable only when the font is installed and licensed.
  • Count the inks you will print. Flat purple and yellow fills can be built as spot or process color; leftover gradients from older globe art may force a four-color rebuild.
  • Keep a one-color version in mind. Signage, stamps, and merchandise often need a single-fill mark. The current badge is the version that usually survives that reduction.

How to prepare or evaluate a file

When the job is to find, check, or hand off artwork, treat delivery as a small kit rather than a single download. A useful set for this identity is: the horizontal wordmark, the circular badge, a stacked option if the layout is narrow, and a single-color master of each. Give each lockup a clear space and a minimum size in the same document so later users do not guess.

That tree is a delivery pattern, not a claim about Planet Fitness’s official package. Previews belong in their own folder so a PNG never gets mistaken for the working file. In the vector masters, keep the mark, the wordmark, and any guides on separate layers. If type must travel without the font, outline a copy and leave a live-type layer in the master for the people who hold the license.

Download rights, fonts and the trademark

Permission to download a logo file is separate from permission to modify the artwork, use the fonts, or apply the trademark.

Planet Fitness owns its name, badge, wordmark, and associated slogans as brand assets. A file that is easy to save from a search result, a media kit, or a design marketplace is still protected artwork. Using it on a flyer, a shirt, an app, or a client presentation requires the rights that cover that use. Recoloring, redrawing, or combining the mark with other graphics is a modification of trademarked art, which needs its own permission.

Type inside the wordmark may be a licensed font or custom lettering. Outlining the name solves missing-font errors at print time; it does not grant a license to set new headlines in the same face. If the file arrives with live text, confirm the font license before you retypeset, extend, or translate the name.

Gaps this audit cannot close

This article does not inspect official Planet Fitness source files, brand manuals, or licensed font contracts. It cannot report path counts, exact spot-color builds, outlined-versus-live type in the brand’s own masters, or a measured before-and-after of file size or node complexity. Those facts live in the files and the license, and they should be read there.

It also cannot certify that any given download is the current mark. Confirm against applications the brand is using now, then open the candidate file and verify paths, lockup, and color before you treat it as production art. If the job is legal use rather than a design study, obtain artwork and written permission from the rights holder or an authorized channel.
