Druk Wide Font Identification
How to recognize Druk Wide in a logo, tell it apart from lookalikes and recreations, and check whether a vector file holds live text, outlined paths or an embedded image.
Contents
Druk Wide is the extended-width member of the Druk type family. Druk is a heavy grotesque sans serif designed by Berton Hasebe and published by the foundry Commercial Type. Druk Wide is often the face behind very broad, very bold, poster-style wordmarks. Two kinds of evidence confirm that a logo actually uses it. The first is comparing its letterforms against the foundry's specimen at a matching weight. The second, if you have the source file, is checking how the text is stored.
Where Druk Wide sits in the Druk family
The Druk family covers a range of widths, from extra-condensed to wide, plus separate cuts intended for text sizes. Druk Wide is the broad, display-oriented end of that range. It comes in several weights, from fairly bold to extremely heavy. The family name alone does not tell you which width or weight a logo uses, so identification has to cover both. The exact list of weights, styles and companion cuts should be checked against the foundry's current specimen, because none was supplied for this article.
Features that point to Druk Wide
- Very wide proportions: letters are clearly wider than they are tall, and the face is usually set in all caps for logos.
- Heavy, even strokes with little visible contrast between thick and thin.
- Round letters such as O, C, G and S tend toward flattened sides rather than true circles, especially in the heavier weights.
- Small counters and narrow openings in the heaviest weights, which give the type a dense, blocky texture.
- Tight letter spacing is common in Druk Wide logos, but spacing is a designer's choice, not a property of the font, so it is weak evidence on its own.
Several other extended grotesques are often mistaken for Druk Wide. Examples include Monument Extended, Akira Expanded and similar wide display sans serifs. Overall impression is not a reliable test. Compare diagnostic characters against specimens at a similar weight: the leg of the R, the spur and bar of the G, the tail of the Q, the terminals of the S, the junction of the K, the numerals and the punctuation. Automated font-identification services work from images and return candidates, not confirmation. Treat their results as a shortlist to check by eye.
The official font versus recreations and custom lettering
Genuine Druk Wide is licensed from Commercial Type or a distributor the foundry authorizes. Files labeled Druk Wide on free-font sites are either unlicensed copies or lookalikes. Either way, they cannot tell you what a particular logo was built from, and their outlines may differ from the original. Many logos also adjust their type: letters are redrawn, joined, trimmed or re-spaced. A close match may therefore mean the logo is based on Druk Wide rather than set straight from it. Only the original file, the designer or the brand owner can settle that.
Check how the logo file stores its type
How you can identify the font depends on what the file actually contains. A file extension is not proof. A PDF, EPS, AI or SVG can hold live text, outlined vector paths, an embedded bitmap, or a mix of these. Open the file and inspect it: use outline or wireframe view, select individual elements, and check the document's font list.
| Content in the file | What it means | How to identify the font |
| Live text (in AI, PDF, EPS or SVG) | Type is still editable as text, but only on a system with the font installed | The font name is usually recorded in the document's font list or the text element's properties |
| Outlined text (vector paths) | Letters have become shapes that scale cleanly and edit as paths | No font name remains, so compare the shapes visually |
| Embedded raster image inside a vector container | Looks like a vector file but holds pixels that blur or pixelate when enlarged | Visual comparison only; the artwork may need to be redrawn as vectors |
| Raster preview (PNG, JPG or a thumbnail) | Pixels only, with no type or path data | Visual comparison or an image-based identification service |
A named font in live text tells you what the creator specified, not necessarily what you are seeing. If that font is missing, software substitutes another one, and a preview may show the stand-in. The SVG fragments below show how the three cases look in markup. The values are illustrative.
<!-- Live text: the font is named; editing needs it installed -->
<text x="0" y="80" font-family="Druk Wide" font-weight="bold">BRAND</text>
<!-- Outlined text: only shapes remain; no font name is kept -->
<path d="M0 0H48V80H0Z" />
<!-- Embedded raster: pixels wrapped in an SVG file -->
<image href="data:image/png;base64,..." width="400" height="80" />
Getting the right asset
Decide first whether you need the font or a specific logo. If you need to set new text in Druk Wide, license the font from the foundry or an authorized distributor. Choose the license type that covers your use, since logo creation typically falls under desktop use. The terms were not supplied here, so read the current license agreement. If you need an existing brand's logo, get the vector artwork from the brand's official brand or press resources, or from its designer. Retyping the name in Druk Wide will not reproduce any customized letters or the exact spacing.
Permissions are separate at each step. Being able to download a logo from a brand's resources does not give you the right to modify it or to use the trademark beyond the brand's guidelines. Owning a Druk Wide license gives you no right to use someone else's mark. Holding a logo file that contains outlined Druk Wide does not license the font for setting new text.
Delivering logos set in Druk Wide
- Supply an outlined master file so recipients without the font see the logo correctly.
- Keep a separate working file with live text for designers who hold a font license and may need to edit the type.
- Record the font family, width and weight in the hand-off notes or brand guidelines.
- Do not bundle font files with the delivery unless the license explicitly allows it.
- Before sending outlined files, check that no live text or embedded raster images are left behind.
Gaps in the available evidence
No foundry specimen, weight list, release date, pricing or license terms were available for this article, so confirm those details with the foundry. No specific logo was examined either. Any claim that a particular logo uses Druk Wide should be confirmed through its source file, its designer or the brand owner.
