Create a Favicon in the Correct Size for Blogger
What size a Blogger favicon should be, how to prepare it from a vector logo, and how to export and upload a square, lightweight icon that stays legible in browser tabs.

The short answer: a small, square raster icon made from your vector logo
A Blogger favicon is the tiny image shown in browser tabs, bookmarks and some search results next to your blog's name. Blogger expects a square image with a small file size. Plan for an icon that reads clearly at the smallest common tab size, usually around 16 by 16 pixels, even if you export it at a larger square size such as 32, 48 or more pixels.
The evidence supplied for this article did not confirm Blogger's current upload limits, so this guide does not give an official pixel size, file-size cap or list of accepted formats. Blogger's upload dialog shows the requirements that apply to your account. Read that note before exporting, because the limits may change and older tutorials may be out of date.
Where your logo fits in: a vector logo, such as an SVG, AI or EPS file with real editable paths, is the best starting point because it scales to any pixel size without blurring. A favicon upload is usually a raster file, such as PNG or ICO. Do not assume Blogger will accept an SVG directly. The practical workflow is to simplify the vector artwork, then export a crisp square raster image from it.
Vector source, embedded raster or preview: check what you actually have
A file extension alone does not prove that a logo contains editable vector paths. An SVG or PDF can simply wrap a pasted-in JPG or PNG, and a file labeled as a logo may only be a flattened preview. Open the file in a vector editor and switch to outline or wireframe view. If you see clean path outlines, you have true vector artwork. If you see a single box with an image inside, the artwork is an embedded raster image. It will not scale more cleanly than the original pixels.
| What you have | What it means for the favicon |
| True vector paths (SVG, AI, EPS, PDF with outlines) | Best case: simplify and export sharp at any square size |
| Vector file containing an embedded raster image | Behaves like a bitmap; quality is limited by the embedded image's resolution |
| Raster preview only (JPG, PNG, screenshot) | Usable if large and clean; otherwise consider redrawing or tracing a simplified mark |
| Logo with live text | Convert text to outlines or confirm font licensing before editing and exporting |
Being able to download a logo file is not the same as having the right to change it or use it. If the logo is not yours, or uses licensed fonts, make sure you have permission to modify the artwork, fonts and any trademarked elements before you turn it into a favicon.
How to create a favicon for Blogger from a vector logo
Starting materials: your logo in its best available form, ideally editable vector; a vector editor that can export PNG; and access to your Blogger dashboard.
- 1. Pick the mark, not the full lockup. Wordmarks and long taglines become unreadable at tab size. Use a symbol, monogram or single initial from your logo.
- 2. Set up a square artboard. Center the mark and leave a small, even margin so it does not touch the edges when it is shrunk.
- 3. Simplify the paths. Remove fine strokes, thin outlines, small details and gradients that will turn into blur at small pixel sizes. Thicken strokes or expand them into filled shapes so their weight stays consistent when scaled.
- 4. Handle the text. If a letter remains, convert it to outlines so the export does not depend on an installed font, and keep an editable copy separately.
- 5. Choose colors for contrast. Use a limited palette with strong contrast. Check that the mark still reads against both light and dark browser tab backgrounds. A solid background shape, such as a filled square or circle, can help.
- 6. Decide on transparency. PNG supports a transparent background. If you keep transparency, make sure the mark does not disappear on dark themes.
- 7. Export a square raster file. Export PNG at the exact square dimensions shown in Blogger's upload requirements, or at a common square size if none are given. Preview it at actual size, not zoomed in.
- 8. Check the file size. Favicon uploads are typically limited to small files. If the export is too heavy, reduce the color count, remove unnecessary detail or compress the PNG.
- 9. Upload in Blogger. In current versions of the dashboard, the favicon option is in the blog's Settings. Older layouts used a Favicon element on the Layout page. Upload the image and save.
Final inspection
- The image is exactly square, with no stretching or cropping of the mark.
- The mark is legible when viewed at actual size in a browser tab.
- The file format and file size match what Blogger's upload dialog asks for.
- No hairline strokes, small text or subtle gradients have turned into gray fuzz.
- The icon has enough contrast on both light and dark tab backgrounds.
- The original editable vector file is saved separately, so you can re-export later without starting over.
- After saving, the new icon appears on the live blog. Browsers cache favicons, so a hard refresh or a private window may be needed before the change shows up.
Gaps to be aware of
The supplied evidence did not confirm Blogger's exact recommended pixel dimensions, maximum file size, accepted file formats or the current menu wording. Treat the sizes mentioned above as common web practice, not Blogger's official specifications, and follow the requirements shown in your own dashboard when they differ.
